THE PROJECT
EMMA is a mobile language-learning application developed by the Paris-based startup Edailabs.
Users practice the language of their choice by conversing with an AI embodied by a Pixar-style 3D
avatar, available anytime and free of judgment. The app counts over 500,000 users with a 4.7/5
rating on the App Store, and Edailabs has raised €5 million to accelerate its growth.
MY ROLE
Working freelance for Edailabs, I took charge of the modeling and texturing of the avatar's various
outfits. The work came with a hard constraint: since the character is rendered in real time in Unity,
every model had to stay under 20,000 polygons to guarantee optimal performance on mobile. A
constant balancing act between the visual richness of the Pixar style and the economy that real-time
rendering demands. I created the models and sculpts in Maya and ZBrush, and the textures in
Substance Painter and Photoshop. This project reflects my custom 3D creation work well, in the same vein as what I did on Kybo, this time with a real-time constraint rather than a final render.
